hearted farmer. His garden was filled with colorful fruits and grains, and in one
corner stood a tall jackfruit tree packed with sweet, juicy fruits that could be
smelled from far away.
One day, the farmer decided to pick a ripe jackfruit from his tree. But as he came
nearer, he saw someone sitting up in the branches. Curious, the farmer called
out, “Who’s up in my tree? And what are you doing there?”
From above, a voice replied, “I am the owner of this tree, a tree deity. The fruits
belong to me, so I came to enjoy them.”
The farmer had never heard of a tree deity owning a jackfruit tree, so, the farmer,
who had doubts about this, thought of a plan to see if there was really a tree deity
on the tree.
He gathered dry sticks and lit a fire under the tree, adding some dried chilies for
extra smoke.
The smoke filled the air, making it uncomfortable for anyone up in the tree.
Coughing and wheezing, the tree deity climbed down.
Then the farmer saw that it was not a tree deity but one of the farmer’s neighbors,
who had sneaked into the tree to eat the delicious fruits.
Feeling ashamed, the neighbor apologized to the farmer.
Seeing the truthfulness in his neighbor’s eyes, the kind farmer forgave him and
offered a slice of jackfruit.
He also taught him how to plant the seeds from the fruit to grow his own jackfruit
tree.

Rich Man’s Lie https://slfolktales.com/rich-mans-lie/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 18:47:13 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=963 Once upon a time, in a village far away, there was a family who had a cow they
loved dearly. Right next to their humble home lived a rich man.
One day, while the family was away on a trip, their cow gave birth to a cute little
calf. The rich man saw this tiny calf playing joyfully and decided to take it for
himself while the family was away. This greedy man tied the calf near his big bull
and pretended it was his own.
When the family returned, they were surprised to see their cow had given birth
but couldn’t find the calf anywhere. They searched and searched until they found
the calf tied up in the rich man’s garden.
So they went over there and asked for the calf.
“How can I give you the calf ? It’s my bull’s baby,” said the rich man.
Feeling sad and helpless, the family decided to seek help from the village chief.
They explained everything to him, and the village chief decided to hear from
everyone involved.
On the day of hearing, the rich man argued that the calf belonged to him since it
was his bull’s.
The village chief decided in favor of the rich man.
The poor family went home with heavy hearts.
The child of the house was sad to see the cow without its baby and cried a lot. A
clever jackal, who lives in the woods nearby, overheard the girl’s cry and
approached the little girl. The jackal asked the girl why she was crying.
After the little girl explained what happened, the jackal offered to help.
“Don’t worry, I will let you know a way to bring that calf back home.” said the jackal
to the child.

The jackal advised the family to tell the village chief that there was a jackal who saw
their cow giving birth to the calf. Following the jackal’s advice, the family told the
village chief about the witness.
So, the village head asked them to bring the jackal next day.
The next day, the jackal didn’t show up but sent the vixen instead. When the angry
village head asked why the jackal didn’t come, the vixen cleverly explained that the
jackal had a cub yesterday, and since he couldn’t leave the newborn cub alone, she
came in his place.
Do you take me for a fool? How could a male animal have a cub?” the village
head shouted.
“Then how could that rich man’s bull have a calf?” argued the vixen.
The village chief realized his mistake in favoring the rich man.
To make things right, the village chief ordered the rich man to return the calf to
the family and pay them fifty gold coins as a punishment for his dishonesty.
The family was overjoyed and thanked the jackal and the vixen for their help. They
went home happily with their beloved calf, knowing that honesty and cleverness
had won the day.

The King and the Flower Plant https://slfolktales.com/the-king-and-the-flower-plant/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 18:35:14 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=958 Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there was a king who didn’t have any
children. This made the king very sad, and he always wondered who would be
the next ruler after him.
One day, the king came up with an idea. He wanted to adopt a child to be the
future king. So, he sent a message to all the boys in the kingdom who were
between eight to ten years old, asking them to come to the palace with their
parents the next day.
The next morning, excited parents with their boys gathered at the palace. The
king gave each boy a tiny seed of a beautiful flower and told them to plant it in a
pot at home. He said that they should bring the blooming flower plant back to the
palace on a special day.
After some time, when the flowers had grown, the king asked all the children to
return with their plants. Everyone came with flourishing flowers except for one
child who had an empty pot.
The king asked the child why there was no plant in his pot.
The child sadly replied, “Dear Lord, I planted the seed you gave me, watered it,
and took care of it every day, but it didn’t grow. My parents told me to have faith
and keep nursing it. I am still waiting for it to sprout.”
The king took the child’s hand and addressed the crowd.
“ You all brought beautifully bloomed flower plants to impress me. But I know that
those plants did not grow from the seeds I gave you last time because all the
seeds I gave were boiled in hot water. Therefore, those seeds couldn’t have
grown.
Only this child and his parents were honest and didn’t replace it with another
seed like you all did.”
He praised the child more and announced to the public that he will be adopted as
the future king because of his sincerity.

The other children and their parents felt ashamed of their dishonesty. From that
day on, the honest child and his parents lived happily in the palace, showing the
value of being honest.

Merchant and the Donkey https://slfolktales.com/merchant-and-the-donkey/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 18:13:42 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=952 Once upon a time, there was a clever merchant who traveled to different fairs
with his favorite donkey. The donkey carried all the goods for trading on its back.
During their travels, whenever they took a break, the clever merchant had a
clever trick to play. He would cover the donkey with a lion’s skin to make it look
like a fierce lion!
Whenever people passed by and saw the donkey wearing the lion’s skin, they
were so scared that they never went near it. This gave the sneaky merchant a
chance to let the donkey wander into fields and munch on tasty plants. When the
donkey was full and happy, the merchant would remove the lion’s skin, load up
the donkey with goods again, and continue their journey.
The merchant and the donkey continued this for quite some time. One day they
reached a village where people saw the lion in a field and started running away in
fear. But a wise man in the village stopped everyone and asked why they were
running. He listened carefully and realized something was fishy because lions
don’t eat paddy!
The wise man gathered everyone and went to the field. He took a closer look at
the lion and noticed something strange. He picked up a stone and threw it at the
lion. To everyone’s surprise, instead of a lion’s roar, they heard a donkey’s bray!
That’s when they all realized it was just a trick.
The villagers stopped being afraid and went to the donkey, taking it for their
keeping. The merchant, caught in his trickery, lost his favorite donkey forever. No
matter how clever you are, the truth will eventually come out, leading to a loss
rather than a gain.

Mother’s Advice https://slfolktales.com/mothers-advice/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 18:10:32 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=947 Once upon a time, in a small house near the forest, there lived a mother and her
mischievous son. This boy loved to explore the forest and eat fruits from the
trees. After a while, everyone in the village talked about a fierce leopard in the
forest. So, the mother warned her son about the danger and advised him not to
go to the forest anymore.
Despite his mother’s warnings, the stubborn boy continued to go to the forest
every day. One day, his mother became very angry and told him, “If you go to the
forest without listening to me, I hope you get eaten by the leopard!”
The naughty boy, thinking he knew better, went to the forest as usual.
As he wandered deeper into the trees, he heard rustling in the bushes. Suddenly,
a big leopard appeared in front of him!
Terrified, the boy remembered his mother’s words and pleaded with the leopard,
“Dear leopard, if you are here to eat me because of my mother’s words, please don’t
do that! I promise to always listen to my mother from now on.”
To the boy’s surprise, the leopard turned around and disappeared into the forest.
The boy quickly ran back home, and he apologized to his mother and promised
to never disobey her again.
From that day on, the boy learned the importance of listening to his mother’s
advice and respecting her wisdom.

Thief and the Ash Gourd https://slfolktales.com/thief-and-the-ash-gourd/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 18:06:05 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=942 Once upon a time, in a cozy little village, there lived a kind-hearted farmer. He was known far and wide for his gentle nature and green thumb.

One season he decided to try growing something special — Ash gourd!

Seasons passed, and Farmer’s hard work paid off! His Ash gourd vines flourished, and before long, there stood the most gigantic Ash gourd anyone had ever seen — big enough to fill a whole cart!

The farmer was delighted about this.

But alas, one morning, the farmer found that his prized  Ash gourd had been stolen! His heart sank at the sight of the empty patch where it once proudly sat.

To solve the mystery, the farmer sought the help of the wise head of the village.

The head of the village listened to the farmer’s story and nodded. “Fear not, Mr. Farmer. he said with a reassuring smile. “I have a plan!”

Together, they gathered all the villagers in the village square. The head of the village explained the situation to the villagers.

“The thief,” he announced, “will surely have traces of ash on their shoulder from carrying away such a hefty gourd! Let us look at everyone’s shoulders to find the culprit!”

The villagers started whispering to each other’s ears and looking around. And among the crowd, a guilty-looking man was spotted quickly trying to brush away the ash from his shoulder.

The head of the village, with a keen eye, quickly identified the thief, much to the surprise of the villagers.

As punishment, the thief had to make amends by helping the farmer tend to his garden and learn the value of hard work and honesty.

Lesson Learned https://slfolktales.com/lesson-learned/ Sun, 17 Nov 2024 16:06:12 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=909 Once upon a time, there were two wise old cranes and a small turtle who lived
happily and comfortably near a bountiful lake.

Unfortunately, their peaceful lives were disturbed by a harsh drought that caused the once-full lake to dry up.

With food and water becoming not enough, the cranes knew they had to find a new home.

One day, they flew away in search of a place with plenty of water. After days of
flying, they found a wonderful area and happily returned to tell their dear turtle
friend.

But when they told the turtle about their exciting new home, the turtle suddenly
burst into tears. “How can I join you at this beautiful lake?” the turtle sobbed. “I
cannot fly. Please, don’t leave me behind.”

The cranes comforted their friend saying that they had a plan. “We have always
lived together and are best friends. Don’t worry, we have a great plan to take you
to our new home.”

The turtle was thrilled. The cranes explained their plan to him.
“First , we would find a strong stick of wood. Then we would each hold the
corners of the stick with our beaks while you held onto the middle with your mouth.
Then we can fly together to the new home.”

Excited by the idea of a new home, the turtle very much liked the plan.

“ But this trip is dangerous. You must promise us that you will never open your
mouth for any reason. You have to stay silent, or you will fall and end up in a
serious accident.” The cranes advised and made the turtle promise to follow
these instructions.

With their belongings packed and their hearts full of hopes, the trio set off on their
journey.

The cranes once again reminded the turtle about the instructions before starting
the journey. The turtle nodded in agreement.

As they flew through the sky, the turtle, caught up in the excitement, forgot all the advices.

He opened his mouth to ask a question: ‘How far is it to that beautiful
lake?’ and quickly fell to the ground.

The cranes were devastated by the accident.

With heavy hearts, they flew to their new home and always reminded their new
friends of the lesson learned from their journey.

Rayigamaya and Gampalaya https://slfolktales.com/rayigamaya-and-gampalaya/ Sun, 17 Nov 2024 15:52:00 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=902 Once upon a time, there were two good-for-nothing fellows named Raigamaya
and Gampalaya. They were not very clever, but they thought they were. One
day, they met up and shared an idea.

“Let’s start a business together!” said Gampalaya.

“That sounds fun! But what should we sell?” asked Raigamaya.

“Let’s gather things from the garden and sell them at the market.” suggested Gampalaya .

Excited about their new venture, they set off to collect their goods.

Raigamaya collected palm seeds that look a lot like areca nuts and put them in a sack, while Gampalaya gathered pepper leaves that look almost the same as betel leaves.

Since the market is so far away, they began their journey in the evening.

Along the way, Gampalaya asked, “What did you bring to sell?”

“I found some tasty areca nuts!” replied Raigamaya proudly.

“I brought these lovely betel leaves,” said Gampalaya .

As they walked, it grew late, so they stopped to rest in an Ambalama. Both friends were tired and
fell asleep.

Early in the morning, Gampalaya woke up first.

He saw Raigamaya’s sack of areca nuts and thought, “I’ll take this to the market
instead of my sack of pepper leaves!”.

A little later, Raigamaya woke up and saw Gampalaya’s sack of betel leaves. He
thought, “I’m lucky Gampalaya left his sack behind. I’ll take these to the market!”.

So, Gampalaya went to the market and told the vendor about the quality of the
areca nuts and asked for a good price. But when the sack was opened, it was full
of palm nuts! Gampalaya was so embarrassed.

The same thing happened to Raigamaya when he tried to sell the betel leaves.

In the end, they both tried to trick each other but ended up tricking themselves.

They learned that honesty is always the best way to do business.

Unity is Power https://slfolktales.com/unity-is-power/ Sun, 17 Nov 2024 15:42:48 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=897 Once upon a time, there lived a farming family in a beautiful village. The farmer
and his wife were blessed with five lovely children. Though they were a happy
family, the children often quarreled with one another over silly things. They grew
older but their quarrels showed no sign of stopping making the parents worried.

One day, the father came up with a brilliant idea to put an end to the fights
among his children.

Gathering them together, he proposed a new game.

“Let’s play a game today,” he said with a smile. “Each of you go to the forest and
bring back two sticks of wood.”

Excited children hurried to gather their sticks of wood. Upon their return, the
father instructed them further.

“Now, hold one stick of wood in each hand,” he said.

The children obeyed, holding the wooden sticks in their hands.

“Now, break the stick of wood in your hands into two,” the father asked.

With little effort, each child broke their single stick of wood in half.

“Good. Now, gather the rest of the sticks and tie them into a bundle,” the father
said again.

Working together, the children tied the rest of the five sticks into a tight bundle.

“Now, let’s see if any of you can break this bundle,” the father challenged.

No matter how hard they tried, the children couldn’t break the bundle of sticks.

Turning to his disappointed children who failed the challenge, the father
explained, “When you are divided and alone, like the single sticks of wood, you
are weak. But when you stick together, like this bundle of sticks, you are strong.
Do you understand?”

Realizing the wisdom in their father’s words, the children nodded in agreement.

From that day on, they learned to value harmony, never again let petty

disagreements come between them.

So, they lived happily ever after, united as a strong and loving family.

The Monkey’s Lesson https://slfolktales.com/the-monkeys-lesson/ Sun, 17 Nov 2024 13:22:18 +0000 https://slfolktales.com/?p=877 Once upon a time, two cats lived together in a cozy house. Although they were good friends, they often fought about sharing things.

One day, they found a delicious sweet called Kavum.

As usual, the cats soon found themselves in a heated argument over who should have it.

Their loud voices caught the attention of a passing monkey, who decided to get involved.

“Why are you two friends arguing so loudly?” asked the curious monkey.

“It’s my sweet!” said one cat.

“No, it’s mine!” said the other.

The clever monkey, sensing an opportunity, proposed a solution.

“If this sweet is for both of you, then you should share it equally, right?” suggested the monkey happily.

The cats agreed.

So the monkey said “ if you like I can divide this fairly between you two”.

“Alright, then you help us fairly share it” the cats requested.

As the monkey broke the sweet in two, one piece turned out to be slightly larger than the other.

“Oh no, one piece is bigger than the other!” cried the cats.

“No worries, I will take a bite from the bigger piece to fix it.” The monkey took a bite from the larger piece.

But then, the other piece seemed bigger. “Now this piece looks bigger and that is unfair!” said the monkey, taking another bite from it.

The cats were helpless.

This kept going until the monkey had eaten both pieces of the sweet.

Then the monkey said, “Well, now neither of you got more, and no one was treated unfairly. So, let’s be happy about it!” before going away on its journey.

Realizing that they could not enjoy the sweet altogether, the two cat friends made a promise to each other.

They vowed never to fight over sharing again.

And from that day on, they lived in harmony, sharing everything equally and happily ever after.
